چکیده

It is shown theoretically and experimentally that opto-electrowetting may be used for both pulling and pushing liquid droplets. A theoretical nalysis based on the Lippmann-equation and an electronic equivalent circuit model allows definition of a voltage and frequency range for which ushing may be achieved, a novelty in electrowetting-based actuation. Experimental confirmation of the effect demonstrates that enhanced flexibility n micro-fluidic actuation may be obtained under appropriate bias conditions. 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Droplet microfluidics on a planar surface

This work reports on the modelling of, and experiments on, a method in which liquid is transported as droplets on a planar hydrophobic surface with no moving parts, merely through electrostatic forces generated by the underlying electrodes. Two-directional transportation along a straight electrode path and across a junction, fusion of two droplets and methods for importing, exporting and filter...

Electrical actuation of electrically conducting and insulating droplets using ac and dc voltages

Electrical actuation of liquid droplets at the microscale offers promising applications in the fields of microfluidics and lab-on-chip devices. Much prior research has targeted the electrical actuation of electrically conducting liquid droplets using dc voltages (classical electrowetting). Electrical actuation of conducting droplets using ac voltages and the actuation of insulating droplets (us...

A Contact Line Dynamic Model for a Conducting Water Drop on an Electrowetting Device

The static shape of drop under electrowetting actuation is well studied and recent electrowetting theory and experiments confirm that the local contact angle (microscopic angle) is unaffected while the apparent contact angle (macroscopic angle) is characterized by the Lippmann-Young equation. On the other hand, the evolution of the drop motion under electrowetting actuation has received less at...

Light actuation of liquid by optoelectrowetting

Optical actuation of liquid droplets has been experimentally demonstrated for the first time using a novel optoelectrowetting (OEW) principle. The optoelectrowetting surface is realized by integrating a photoconductive material underneath a two-dimensional array of electrowetting electrodes. Contact angle change as large as 308 has been achieved when illuminated by a light beam with an intensit...

Electrowetting on a lotus leaf.

Electrowetting on dielectrics has been widely used to manipulate and control microliter or nanoliter liquids in micro-total-analysis systems and laboratory on a chip. We carried out experiments on electrowetting on a lotus leaf, which is quite different from the equipotential plate used in conventional electrowetting. This has not been reported in the past. The lotus leaf is superhydrophobic an...
